Welcome to Alpha of New Jersey

Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest and most prestigious liberal arts honorary society in the United States. The organization was founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary in Virginia. The Alpha chapter in the State of New Jersey was established at Rutgers College in 1869.

The Rutgers College chapter of Phi Beta Kappa elects outstanding juniors and seniors with the following credentials:

  • Students must be pursuing a liberal arts major. Liberal arts majors are identified by an asterisk (*) in the majors list (see degree requirements).
  • Students must have demonstrated proficiency in a foreign language at the second semester intermediate level, either by completing the fourth semester of a foreign language at Rutgers or its equivalent at another institution, or by placing into a 200-level course (300 level for Russian) on the foreign language placement test.
  • Students must have no record of disciplinary action.
  • To be nominated in the junior year, students must have completed 60 credits at Rutgers by the end of the fall semester of the junior year and must have a cumulative average of 3.800 or above.
  • To be nominated in the senior year, students must have completed 60 credits at Rutgers by the end of the fall semester of the senior year and must have a cumulative average of 3.500 or above.
