Who We Are: PBK - Alpha of New Jersey

Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest and most prestigious liberal arts honorary society in the United States. The organization was founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary in Virginia. The Alpha chapter in the State of New Jersey was established at Rutgers College in 1869.

The Rutgers College chapter of Phi Beta Kappa elects outstanding juniors and seniors with the following credentials:

Students must be pursuing a liberal arts curriculum.
Students must have demonstrated proficiency in a foreign language equivalent to completion of at least the second semester of the intermediate level. For example, satisfactory completion of Spanish 132 or Modern Greek 202 would meet the language requirement; the course number for the second semester intermediate course varies by department. The language proficiency may be met by placing above the intermediate level on the foreign language placement test.
Students must have no record of disciplinary action.
To be nominated in the junior year, students must have completed 36 credits at Rutgers by the end of the fall semester of the junior year and must have a cumulative average of 3.800 or above.
To be nominated in the senior year, students must have completed 48 credits at Rutgers by the end of the fall semester of the senior year and must have a cumulative average of 3.500 or above.
